Ash Wednesday is a Christian day of prayer, fasting and repentance and falls on the first day of Lent. Lent is a a six week period of penitence before Easter. On Ash Wednesday Christians have ashes placed on their foreheads while receiving the words "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return" or "Repent and believe in the Gospel." Often the ashes are prepared by burning the palm leaves from the previous years Palm Sunday celebration. This season is marked by fasting and/or abstinence, prayer and daily devotion.
First Henderson United Methodist Church holds an Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 pm. All who wish to participate in the celebration of Ash Wednesday are invited to attend.
